Read on hear for how to enter  juried shows, participate in/sponsor/ hold workshops, and join the annual Art Port Townsend studio tour.

Exhibit Information – Northwind Arts Center exhibits work by Northwest regional artists at the Center.  The primary exhibit space is used for scheduled monthly exhibits, either juried or invitational. The adjacent gallery space is rented by “walls” to selected regional artists for a minimum of a month, but is generally contracted for longer term rental.

The Center is open & staffed by volunteers from noon – 5 pm Thursday – Monday. Additionally, the Center is open during Port Townsend Art Walk each first Saturday of the month, and for special events. Art talks, demonstrations, and artists workshops are often scheduled in conjunction with shows.

Juried Shows are held three times per year. A prospectus will be published for each show and made available at the gallery and on the web. The prospectus specifies all requirements for artists wishing to submit works, includes the show calendar (dates for submitting work, pickup of submissions, show dates, pickup of show work), and identifies the Northwind contacts for each show.

Entering a juried show: A Northwind juried show generally receives far more submittals than it has space to hang. The Art Port Townsend 2006 show had 750 entries, and could hang only 72. Juror Susan Parke commented:

“To select only about 10% of the 750 worthy entries is not an easy task. Some slides and photographs show works to their best advantage while poor slides reflect negatively on both art and artist. Deserving entries may have been missed because of the slide selection method. To those artists I apologize.”

Invitational Shows – artists will be contacted directly and requested to submit works for these shows.

Sales from the Exhibition Gallery – Northwind Arts Alliance will pay a wholesale price equal to 60% of the retail selling price. Northwind will collect and remit Washington State sales tax.

Artist Showcase Gallery – Northwind Arts Alliance has expanded their current exhibition space with an adjacent gallery called Artist Showcase, open during the Northwind Art Center regular hours. This new space is dedicated to showcasing local artists work, and is also available for workshops and other events. Please contact Jay Haskins or Jeanette Best (360) 437-9579 or jbest@cablespeed.com if you would like more information about renting workshop or display space in the Artist Showcase Gallery.

Floorplan of the Artist Showcase Gallery

Art workshop space is available by reservation for a nominal fee at the Artist Showcase gallery space ($50/day as of 1/2010). Tables, chairs, small kitchen, large sink and bathroom facilities are available. Set up and cleanup is required, and note that the workshop space is also exhibit space for 2-D and 3-D art. Please contact Jay Haskins or Jeanette Best at (360) 437 9579 or at jbest@cablespeed.com to schedule.  An information sheet is also available at the gallery with additional information.

Workshop Enrollment – attendance is always limited, so reserve early. Coordination, fees, and scheduling are the responsibility of the workshop instructor or coordinator.

Artists’ Studio Tour – artists who wish to participate in the tour should contact Northwind Arts Center for more information and forms; generally the call for studio tour artists begins the several months before each year’s event. The entry fee helps to cover the costs of the brochure, signs, and publicity provided by NAA.

Artist Participation – Artists who wish to exhibit, lead a workshop, or share expertise in an art talk should contact  a Northwind Arts Center board member.

Publicity

Northwind has a volunteer staff that will help ensure your exhibit is well attended. It is essential that you and your contact/curator begin the publicity process at least eight weeks in advance of the event.

For gallery events, please complete the curator form at least 8 weeks prior to a show.

Click here to open the curator form in Microsoft Word.

For gallery events, please complete the attached form at least 8 weeks prior to the event by opening the form, saving it to your computer, filling out the saved file (in Microsoft Word) and then emailing the completed document with associated images to the board member responsible for the website and newsletter.”

Publicity Images (gallery or workshop related)

Note that images must be SEPARATELY attached to the e mail, and of sufficient quality to be used in printed materials and black and white newspaper ads. This means that the images must be 300 dpi at the size they will be printed. Expect file sizes about 1 MB or larger. Additional low resolution copies of images are not required but are helpful for email and online publicity, which includes the newsletter, the web site, Facebook, etc.

It is critical that we correctly attribute all art works to the proper artist! It is helpful to submit image files with names based on the work title plus the artist’s name.  In addition, please include a separate list of images (work title, artist, filename). For solo shows, try to provide three good quality images (of three different works); for a two artist show, two images each is sufficient. With more than two artists, try to provide one good image from each artist. For juried shows, we want at least three images as soon as possible, and images of the show award winners.

If you choose to embed your images in the Word forms, please ALSO include the attached files for those images. Attached images may be in jpeg or tiff format. Mac users: please make sure the appropriate file suffix (.doc, .jpg, or .tif) has been appended to your files.

Show Entry Print Guidelines

Printed brochures and prospectuses have limited space to describe guidelines for submitting prints for juried show entries. This section adds more detail. Most juried shows will accept high quality prints from digital images OR photographs mounted on 8 1/2 by 11 inch paper as indicated below. Note that Northwind does NOT accept digital files or CDs unless otherwise specified in the prospectus.

It is essential that the juror see a representative image of your artwork; in particular the color must be accurate. Poorly lit or color shifted images can disqualify your work. Consider having your work professionally photographed.

Click here to see an example print, with labels.

Print

  • Printed images must be of the highest possible resolution.
  • If the prints are from digital files, they should equate to 300 dots per inch as a goal.
  • Prints must be on or firmly attached to a 8.5 by 11″ photo quality paper in “portrait” orientation.
  • Image size must be no larger than 5×8, and no smaller than 4×6.
  • High quality photographs presented in the same manner will be accepted.
