Gallery Happenings
"Altered Palettes" - Featuring the work of
Barbara Sternberger
Through May 23rd,
Northwind Arts Center will feature the rich and vibrant paintings of
Barbara Sternberger. Her colorful works evolve out of integrating her
external and internal vision. She says, "This fusion (of vision) brings
recognition to a particular place which normally can’t be seen, but is
somehow familiar. Exposing these places of mind by using the painting
process is what my work is about." There have been many major shows of
her work, and her paintings, drawings, and prints are widely collected
throughout the Northwest.
Beginning May 27th
- "Platemarks II: The Printmaker’s Art."
This juried exhibit
showcases printmakers from Jefferson, Clallam, Island, and Kitsap
counties. Pat Austin is the juror for this show. She has been a
printmaker, teacher, and writer for 35 years, having studied with
prominent printmakers in over 30 master workshops. Austin maintains a
studio in her home in Port Townsend. If you would like to enter, please
see the "Call for Artists" section in this newsletter or visit our
website. There will be a reception for the artists on May 28th,
5:30 – 8:00 P.M. at Northwind.
"Coffee, Talk, & Dessert" Series

Barbara Sternberger will be the guest
lecturer on Friday, April 29th, at 7:00 P.M.

Art Port Townsend Studio Tour seeks
artists. Each year, a
major part of Art Port Townsend art festival is the Artists’ Studio
Tour. This free tour, October 15th – 16th,
offers an opportunity for the public to visit local artists in their
studios, observe demonstrations and discuss the creative process. This
year the festival is extending an open call to all visual artists
within reasonable traveling distance of Port Townsend to be included
on the studio tour. There is a $50 fee for participating artists,
which covers the cost of printed materials, maintaining the website,
and associated costs of the tour.*
The Artists Studio Tour brochure is distributed throughout the area
for one year. Please let your artist friends know of this
opportunity. Contact the studio chairperson, Sandy Guinup, at (360)
379-3025 or
sguinup@olypen.com.
Deadline for inquiries has
been extended to May 7th.
For artists who sign up for the Studio
Tour, Sherry Grover will present the workshop, "Preparing for the Art
Port Townsend Studio Tour Workshop." This will be presented at
Northwind Arts Center, May 10th, from 6:30 – 8:30 P.M. Some
topics Sherry will cover are presenting your image, talking about your
work, traffic flow in your studio, building relationships for future
sales, and generally what to expect during a studio tour. If you wish
to attend, you must sign up for Sherry’s workshop, as space is limited
to the first 30. There is no charge for the workshop. To sign up,
please contact Kimm Fay at
bhealthy@earth-web.net or sign
up at Northwind.

Jefferson Arts Alliance-
Port Townsend Sister City Friends’ call for artists.
The City of Port Townsend would like to
commission an art piece, created by a Jefferson County artist, to take
over as a gift to our Sister City. It can be most any form of visual
art. For information, please contact Catherine McNabb, City of Port
Townsend, 181 Quincy St., #301, Port Townsend, WA 98368. You may also

An Invitation from Jefferson Arts Alliance
The Jefferson Arts Alliance (NAA)
invites you to enjoy the
reading of the 1998 Tony Award winning play, "Art", by Yasmine Reza. May
is Membership Drive Month for NAA, the umbrella organization for
Northwind Arts Center, Art Port Townsend, the poetry readings, the
year-round studio tour, workshops, and coffee talks. In gratitude, new
members, returning members, and future members are invited to attend this
play reading on May 13th at the Northwind Arts Center. The
play is a comedy about Serge who just bought a very expensive painting- a
5 feet by 4 feet, all white with white diagonal lines, painting. Newsweek
said, "…a nonstop cross-fire of crackling language, serious issues of
life and art expressed in outbursts that sound like Don Rickles with a
degree from the Sorbonne…"
There will be appetizers
served from 7:30 – 8:00 P.M. and the play reading will be from 8:00 –
9:15 P.M. An audience discussion with the actors will follow the play.
The cost is $5.00 for NAA members and $10.00 for non-members. Please call
Miriam Lansdon for reservations at (360) 385-1621 or Laurie Perrett at
(360) 385-6534. We look forward to seeing you there!
Northwind Arts Center Volunteer Spotlight
Northwind could not operate
without its volunteers. This month our spotlight shines on Jim
Watson-Gove. Jim moved to Port Townsend a bit over two years ago. He
relocated from the San Francisco Bay Area where he had been active in the
poetry and art scenes. Jim currently does docent duties on Fridays at
Northwind. With Don Roberts, he hosts the readings at Northwind and
Lehani’s Coffeehouse and Deli. Jim says, "I have been painting off and on
since I was 17 and have been writing poetry since I was 12. I am also a
small press publisher, under the imprint of Minotaur Press, since 1965."
If you would like to join
the Northwind volunteer team, please call Karen at (360) 379-2620.
