“Summer Pasture” – Don Tiller            “Christopher’s Girl” – Stacey Newmiller

 “Crevice” – Jan Hoy

From October 8th – 30th, the Port Townsend Arts Commission and the Jefferson Arts Alliance present the 7th annual Art Port Townsend festival celebrating the visual, literary, and performing arts.  Esther Luttikhuizen is the juror for this year’s art show featuring 90 Northwest artists from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, British Columbia, and Alaska.   Luttikhuizen is currently the Collections Manager and Director of the Kittredge Gallery at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma.  There will be an opening reception and awards ceremony for the artists on October 8th, 7:00 P.M., at Northwind.  For this show, Northwind’s hours will be Friday through Monday, 11:00 A.M. – 6:00 P.M.

“Coffee, Talk, & Dessert” Series

There is no “Coffee, Talk, & Dessert” lecture scheduled for this show.   Instead, the lecture “Inside the Selection Process”, will be given by Art Port Townsend’s juror, Esther Luttikhuizen.   The lecture is free and will be on Sunday, October 9th, 1:00 P.M. at Northwind.

Since 1985, Esther has had a wide variety of opportunities to participate in and/or observe the art selection process including her earlier experiences as a studio artist submitting her own art to be juried.  In her current situation of curating exhibitions as director of a college gallery, she has had many opportunities to select or pass-over artists’ work.  Luttikhuizen’s talk will be an informal rumination on the responsibilities associated with this experience and observations she has made on the ins-and-outs of the selection process.

Northwind Arts Center Volunteer Spotlight

Northwind could not operate without its volunteers.  This month our spotlight shines on Dicksy Scott.  This is Dicksy’s story in her own words:  I moved to Port Townsend (the greatest and friendliest place) to live near my children and grandchildren, to “retire”, and to pursue arty interests- something I had not had time for before.  Miriam Lansdon, then President of Jefferson Arts Alliance, “captured” me on my first weekend in town.  She persuaded me to join the NAA Board and help with finance issues.  Helping on the Board, volunteering at Northwind Arts Center, studying art in Miriam’s gregarious and enlightening classes, taking full advantage of the discount for volunteers at NAA-offered workshops, meeting artists, and learning gobs at NAA coffee talks have all advanced my appreciation of the fine arts community that populates the Quimper Peninsula.  Along the way, I have learned about collage, drawing, pottery, and painting.  Most recently, I have worked, along with Board Member Don Roberts and Jan Kahn, to expand Art Port Townsend into an Arts Festival that includes dance, poetry, music, and theater as part of this October celebration of the arts.

Many of Northwind’s volunteers are not artists.  If you are interested in the donation of a few hours to the arts, and would like to join the Northwind volunteer team, please call Karen at (360) 379-2620.

Poetry News

For more Poetry news, please visit the poetry page.  There are works on that page from nearly all the poets who have recently read.

The next reading at Northwind is on October 13th, and features Sy Kahn and Quentin Wald.  It starts at 7:00 P.M., and there will be an open mike reading after the featured readers. Call Northwind at 379-1086 for more details and to register for the poetry (and/or visual arts) e-mail newsletters.

Sy Kahn, Professor Emeritus of Literature and Drama at the University of the Pacific, in Stockton, California, received the University's highest academic honor, the Order of the Pacific, when he retired after 45 years of teaching.  He established the Drama Department at Pacific, teaching and directing there for 26 years.  His academic career also included teaching abroad in Wales and Germany, as well as a record four Fulbright appointments in American Literature for academic years at universities in Greece, Poland, Austria and Portugal.

Sy Kahn has published six books of poetry, with the seventh in press, and edited two others, including "Devour the Fire," selected poems of the American expatriate Harry Crosby, who was a precursor to the beat poets.  Also, Kahn's World War II diary, which he kept as a soldier, was published in 1993 as "Between Tedium and Terror: A Soldier's Diary 1943-1945" by the University of Illinois Press, and reprinted in 2000.

A resident of Port Townsend since 1993, he has directed a number of plays locally (as well as over 350 different productions in the United States and Europe during his lifetime), served as President of Key City Players, and served on the Port Townsend Arts Commission.  In 2003, Sy received the Angel of the Arts Award from the City of Port Townsend and the Arts Commission.

Trained as an aeronautical engineer, Quentin Wald contributed to the early development of the helicopter and designed several major wind tunnels.  Later, he specialized in marine hydrodynamics.  In his own sailing craft he has cruised extensively in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean Seas.  In recent years he has been writing essays, completed a technical study of the aerodynamics of propellers, published a book on the Wright brothers as engineers and a volume of poetry.
