Gallery Happenings
Thank you to all the artists, art lovers, and art purchasers who made the first “Postcards to Port Townsend” fund raising event for Northwind Arts Center such a success. An additional “Thanks for all your hard work” goes to the show’s creator and organizer, Deedra Ludwig, and to Jay Haskins for all the assistance he provided for this and all of Northwind’s shows.
The remaining
postcards will be for sale at Northwind- $25 each or 5 for $100. Ask the
volunteer on duty for the post card book where they are now kept. The
Jefferson Arts Alliance would like feedback from those of you who attended
the show. You can send your comments and suggestions about future "Postcards
to Port Townsend" fundraising events/shows to Rae at artist@cablespeed.com.
You might include improvements, how often should this event be held, what
time of year is best, suggestions on how to reach other artists across the
globe, etc.
November Show: Northwind Exhibits Work by Nöle Giulini
From November 4th – 27th, Northwind Arts Center will present an invitational exhibit by Nöle Giulini, of Port Townsend, titled, “The Emperor’s New Clothes & Other Works”. For this exhibit, Giulini has used cast-off materials, as well as her own home grown Kombucha Culture, to create her intriguing work.
This fungus culture grows in membrane form and is a symbiosis of yeast cells and different bacteria. It feeds off a solution of black tea and sugar. As the culture ages, in time, it organically evolves a thick layer of living skin floating on top of the liquid. Once shaped, the skins are treated with frankincense and myrrh resin to protect and preserve them. About her sculptural works, she says, “Matter regarded as flawed, without value, or no longer useful is given significance and meaning through the creative process. Something unwanted, perhaps offensive, can be discovered to be sacred and complete.” Over the years, reviewers have called her work compelling, noteworthy, questioning of society’s values, and disturbing.
In June, Artist Trust, a major artist’s advocacy organization, awarded $76,331 in its Grants for Artist Projects (GAP) to 58 outstanding Washington artists. One of the recipients was Nöle Giulini. She received her award to support the research and development of a new body of work that incorporates growing Kombucha Culture and traditional felt making techniques.
“Coffee, Talk, & Dessert” Series
On Friday, November 11th at 7:00 p.m., the artist Nöle Giulini will give a lecture about her work as part of the Coffee Talk Series offered at Northwind Arts Center (2409 Jefferson St., Port Townsend). Admission is $2.00 for Jefferson Arts Alliance members and $5.00 for non-members. Complete information regarding Northwind events can be found at www.northwindarts.org.
