Announcements

  • Northwind is now open on Thursdays, too!  (Noon to 5:00 P.M., Thursday Monday)
  • The fine folks who organize our workshops (the Jefferson Arts Alliance’s Education Committee) need a volunteer to act as a secretary to help keep track of paperwork, take notes at the education meetings, write them up and distribute them to committee members via e-mail.  (A computer with some version of “Word” is a necessity.)   Please contact Lois James at 437-0422 or loisj@cablespeed.com if, every once in awhile, you can donate a little time- it would be very much appreciated.  Thank you.

Current show:  “Characters of Port Townsend” by Leslie Cox

                      “Brent”                      “Ginger”                      Aaron”

Until February 20th, Northwind Arts Center will present an invitational exhibit by Leslie Cox titled, “Characters of Port Townsend”.  For this exhibit, Les has gathered 45 contemporary oil portraits of people from Port Townsend- most will be for sale.

The subjects for the “Characters of Port Townsend” show are people who have sat for Cox for their portraits in the last ten years.  Most of the portraits are of people still living in the area.  New York artist Alice Neel, who was able to capture portraits of people very quickly, influenced Cox.   It is challenging to capture a person’s personality and likeness in a matter of 4-5 hours, but that is what Cox has been able to do.  He gives credit to time spent with the Quimper Arts group who meet on Wednesdays at the Port Townsend Fairground Arts Building to do life drawing.

“Coffee, Talk, & Dessert” Series

No “Coffee Talk and Dessert” lecture is planned for the Leslie Cox exhibit.

“Lecture Series”

The goal of art history is the appreciation and enjoyment of art from whatever time and place it may have come from and by whatever hands it was made.  A series of art history lectures will be held on Wednesday evenings, 7:00 P.M., at Northwind Arts Center.  The cost is $2.00 for members and $5.00 for non-members.

Leslie Cox will deliver two remaining art history lectures and Pat Austin will provide three more in March.  Cox’s second lecture, titled “Mannerism”, will be held February 1st.  His third lecture, titled “Baroque”, will be held February 8th.  Cox has studied and taught art in many locations: Florence and Rome, Italy, Billings Montana, British Columbia and more recently in Bremerton and Port Townsend.  He has shown his art in New York, Colorado, Montana, and Seattle.

Pat Austin will begin her art history lectures on March 8th.  The first one, titled “Realism Reinvented”, focuses on French Impressionism as a gateway to new themes and meanings in painting.  Austin’s second lecture, on March 15th, is titled “Man and Manifesto”.  It dives into modern art including cubism, expressionism, fauvism, pointillism, surrealism and others.  Her third lecture, on March 22nd, is titled “Tradition and Tsunami”.  It covers contemporary art and the changes in rules, roles and relationships it has influenced.

Pat Austin has been an artist, teacher, and writer for 35 years in Alaska, Washington, and internationally through Print Arts Northwest, of which she was a founder.  Her degree from the University of Washington led to two decades of college level teaching of printmaking.  She has exhibited her artwork extensively.

!!!  Northwind Art Opportunity  !!!

Northwind announces its third juried show of abstract painting, sculpture, photography, and jewelry-February 24 – March 27.  Artists must be 16 years of age or older and a resident of Washington.  Entries, not exceeding 50 inches in width (including frame for two-dimensional work), will be juried from the original works of art (no slides or photos).  All two-dimensional works on paper must have glass or Plexiglas, be sturdily framed, and ready to hang with wire.  Presentation will be a factor in selection.

Artists wishing to submit work for jurying should bring their work to the Northwind Arts Center (2409 Jefferson St., Port Townsend) on February 19th (3:00 – 6:00 P.M.) or February 20th (3:00 – 6:00 P.M.).  A prospectus and additional information are available at the Arts Center, at this link, by calling Jeanette Best at (360) 437-9579, or by e-mail at artist@cablespeed.com.  All work must be original, created within the last 3 years and without the supervision of an instructor.  A maximum of 5 entries may be submitted.  A fee of $10.00 is required for one entry and $5.00 for each additional entry.  All fees are non-refundable.

Workshops

Jefferson Arts Alliance presents the following 2006 workshops:

Note- please visit our workshops page or call the Center for more information and registration forms.

“A Skeletal Approach to Life Drawing”, March 27 - 28, 10:00 A.M.-4:00 P.M. with Deanna Pindell.

This workshop is designed to give students greater confidence and skill at drawing the human figure, and its details, such as hands and heads.  We will work with a human replica skeleton and a live model to study skeletal anatomy in action.  As we learn to identify the bony landmarks, we will use them to define gesture, measure proportion, and clarify foreshortening.  Then we will see how the muscles spiral around the bones, creating volumes and dynamic mass.  Each student will be guided towards creating inspired figure drawings in their own style.  Location:  Jefferson County Fairgrounds Art Building.  Cost: $140 - includes model fees.  Contact: Karen Huguley at 379-1827 or karenhuguley@yahoo.com

“Creating Collagraphs”, April 22 – 23, 10:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M. with Sandy Rokoff-Lizut.

Sandy will share an approach to collagraphs developed by Scottish printmaker Lennox Dunbar that entails creating painted intaglio plates in a direct, refreshing and exciting way.  Using non-toxic paints and products together with quick simple painting and drawing methods, participants will etch into and draw upon the plates.  Once completed, plates will be used to pull multiple prints with Akua Kolor non-toxic inks.  Printmaking experience is helpful but not necessary.  Location:  Fort Worden Building 205.  Cost: $120.  Materials fee:  $20.  Contact:  Sandra Rokoff-Lizut at 379-1511 or sand@cablespeed.com

“Sumi Painting/Mixed Media”, May 22 – 23, 10:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M. with Reni Moriarty.  Location: Jefferson County Fairgrounds Art Building.  Cost:  $120 for 2 days.  Contact:  Jeanette Best at 437-9579 or jbest@cablespeed.com

“Encaustic Mixed Media”, June 19 – 20, 10:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M. with Joan Stuart Ross.  Participants will create an original palette of encaustic colors, prepare and prime wood panels and other surfaces, paint, collage, engrave, use oil stick techniques, try methods of adhering an encaustic on paper to wood panel, and explore various finishing techniques.  Location:  Jefferson County Fairgrounds Art Building.  Cost:  $180 (includes most materials).  Contact:  Lois James at 437-0422 or loisj@cablespeed.com

Volunteering is a "Good Thing"

Did you know that Northwind Arts Center, Art Port Townsend, the poetry readings, art workshops, and other special events sponsored by the Jefferson Arts Alliance are organized and run by volunteers? The Jefferson Arts Alliance absolutely could not operate without its volunteers. Many of our volunteers are not artists. If you are interested in the donation of a few hours to the arts, or you would like to join the Northwind volunteer team and perhaps do data entry or help host our Coffee Talks or art lectures, please call our volunteer coordinator, Karen Putterman, at (360) 379-2620.

Port Townsend/Bay St. Louis Sister City update:

You and your organization might help Gulf area artists by:

  • Joining the Arts Committee of the Sister City Project (hardly any meetings – just specific tasks).

  • Offering artists free accommodations in Port Townsend for a week or two. Perhaps you have a guest cabin or could offer a house sitting opportunity while you’re traveling?

  • Donating art supplies and musical instruments that can be left at Northwind Arts Center- many lost absolutely everything in the hurricane.

These are just a few ways in which you may help in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. For more information, please contact Kate Dwyer at 385-3345 or kdwyer@olympus.net.

Thank you.
