He has received numerous awards and honors and his work resides in the collections of the Washington Arts Commission, the Tacoma Art Museum, Amgen Corporation, and Nordstrom Corporation among others.
“Lecture Series”
The goal of art history is the appreciation and enjoyment of art from whatever time and place it may have come from and by whatever hands it was made. A series of art history lectures will be held on Wednesday evenings, 7:00 P.M., at Northwind Arts Center. The cost is $2.00 for members and $5.00 for non-members.
Pat Austin will begin her art history lectures on March 8th. The first one, titled “Realism Reinvented”, focuses on French Impressionism as a gateway to new themes and meanings in painting. Austin’s second lecture, on March 15th, is titled “Man and Manifesto”. It dives into modern art including cubism, expressionism, fauvism, pointillism, surrealism and others. Her third lecture, on March 22nd, is titled “Tradition and Tsunami”. It covers contemporary art and the changes in rules, roles and relationships it has influenced.
Pat Austin has been an artist, teacher, and writer for 35 years in Alaska, Washington, and internationally through Print Arts Northwest, of which she was a founder. Her degree from the University of Washington led to two decades of college level teaching of printmaking. She has exhibited her artwork extensively.

Jefferson Arts Alliance presents the following 2006 workshops:
Note- please visit our workshops page or call the Center for more information and registration forms.
This workshop is designed to give students greater confidence and skill at drawing the human figure, and its details, such as hands and heads. We will work with a human replica skeleton and a live model to study skeletal anatomy in action. As we learn to identify the bony landmarks, we will use them to define gesture, measure proportion, and clarify foreshortening. Then we will see how the muscles spiral around the bones, creating volumes and dynamic mass. Each student will be guided towards creating inspired figure drawings in their own style. Location: Jefferson County Fairgrounds Art Building. Cost: $140 - includes model fees. Contact: Karen Huguley at 379-1827 or karenhuguley@yahoo.com
NEW WORKSHOP ADDED!
Sandy will share an approach to collagraphs developed by Scottish printmaker Lennox Dunbar that entails creating painted intaglio plates in a direct, refreshing and exciting way. Using non-toxic paints and products together with quick simple painting and drawing methods, participants will etch into and draw upon the plates. Once completed, plates will be used to pull multiple prints with Akua Kolor non-toxic inks. Printmaking experience is helpful but not necessary. Location: Fort Worden Building 205. Cost: $120. Materials fee: $20. Contact: Sandra Rokoff-Lizut at 379-1511 or sand@cablespeed.com
Volunteering is still a “Good Thing”
Did you know that Northwind Arts Center, Art Port Townsend, the poetry readings, art workshops, and other special events sponsored by the Jefferson Arts Alliance are organized and run by volunteers? The Jefferson Arts Alliance absolutely could not operate without its volunteers. Many of our volunteers are not artists. If you are interested in the donation of a few hours to the arts, or you would like to join the Northwind volunteer team and perhaps do data entry or help host our Coffee Talks or art lectures, please call our volunteer coordinator, Karen Putterman, at (360) 379-2620.
Poetry News
Please visit our Poetry page on this site. Both artists will have samples of their work up on the poetry pages; follow the links below:
The poetry of Nancy Dahlberg and Ellen Elizabeth will be featured at Northwind’s March 9, 2006 reading.
Nancy Dahlberg, a Seattle poet with roots in Chicago, serves on the advisory board of PoetsWest and is membership chair of Washington Poets Association. Her poems have been published in many literary journals, have appeared in Seattle’s Poetry on Buses, and have been anthologized in Poets Table Anthology and Mute Note Earthward. She has been featured poet in PoetsWest at The Frye.
Ellen Elizabeth moved to the Pacific Northwest twenty-five years ago, following a childhood and time in Germany and Maryland. Her love affair with poetry began at age 3 when she memorized Mother Goose rhymes. Later, with two small children, she read Emily Dickinson and tried to copy her style. Ellen’s formal training was at Bellevue Community College and University of Washington. Her art is formed by the natural world and by her work in inner liberation and healing. Her poems have won awards and have been published in literary magazines and displayed in public art projects. In 2004, Writer’s Haven Press published her book, On Sandstone Singing.
