October 2006 NEWSLETTER:  “Arty Things To Do”

Editor: Rae Belkin

Gallery Happenings

Karen Hackenberg – “Small Wonder”   Don Haggerty – “Study in  Turquoise”
Wanda Garrity – “Samurai Warrior”    Christopher Martin Hoff -   “Floating”

“Expressions Northwest”

These are just 4 of the approximately 80 wonderful pieces you will see in this year’s Art Port Townsend Juried Show, “Expressions Northwest”.  Susan Parke, Curator of Collections and Exhibitions for the Museum of Northwest Art in La Conner, Washington, is the juror for this year’s show.  The show will be on display at Northwind Arts Center from October 7th – 29th.  Ms. Parke comments on the juried show:  “To select about 10% of the worthy entries, about 80 pieces, submitted by 236 artists, was not an easy task.  As juror, I am looking for vitality, work that pushes compositional boundaries or uses common materials in uncommon ways, and I want my art to address something new, something I have not yet noticed, about the world around me.  Good art is powerful; it communicates strong emotion and feeling.  I was asked to pass judgment on a remarkably strong body of work.  Many inventive and technically sophisticated artists entered this competition and seventy-two of those creative voices are on view for the larger community to see and enjoy in this year’s exhibition.  The works in this show are fresh, bold and creative.  I hope the artists and viewers are as delighted as I am with the 8th Annual Art Port Townsend that highlights what is happening in Northwest art today.”  The show will be open during the monthly Art Walk on October 7th from 5:30 – 8:00 P.M.

Juror’s Lecture

On October 7th, 1:00 P.M. at Nothwind Arts Center, the show’s Juror, Susan Parke, will speak on, “Currents:  Contemporary Directions in Northwest Art”.  Besides her work with the Museum of Northwest Art, she has owned two contemporary galleries in Illinois, worked in university museums and galleries at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne and at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio.  Susan currently lives in Anacortes, Washington with her painter husband, Dederick Ward.  The lecture is free.

Other Art Port Townsend Events – Mark your calendars!

  • October 14th and 15th: From 10:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M., Art Port Townsend has an extensive Artists Studio Tour planned.  There is no charge for the tour which provides an opportunity to visit local artists in their studios, observe demonstrations, and discuss the creative process.  Nearly 50 artists in the Port Townsend vicinity are participating.  Artists working in oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastels, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, woodworking, fabric, glass and a variety of mixed media will be included in the tour.  Maps and information are available at Northwind Arts Center or www.artporttownsend.org.
  • October 10th:  7:00 P.M. there will be a “Write-In” at Northwind.  Writers are invited to respond to an individual work in the juried show or to the show as a whole.
  • October 26th:  7:00 P.M. at Northwind, a “Write-in Reading (a reading of writer’s and poet’s reactions to the juried art show) is scheduled.  There is no charge.
  • October 27th:  7:00 P.M. at the Wheeler Theater at Fort Worden State Park, Port Townsend, distinguished musicians, poets, theatre performers, and dancers will respond to visual art from the juried show and from artists participating in the Studio Tour in an interactive display of performance art called,  “Interactions: Art & Art”.  Tickets are available at the door for $10 ($5 for students).  For a complete schedule and maps please visit www.artporttownsend.org or call Northwind at (360) 379-1086.  The interactions of the performances with the larger than life projected images are sure to be surprising and imaginative.  Performing artists may present emotional responses, use images from the visual art as formal elements in the responsive medium, or create a story from the image- all in a magical “cross fertilization” of the arts.  Beatus Meier said that the hope of the organizers was “to stimulate everyone’s imagination and curiosity” and “to develop a feedback loop of a kind that is potentially more valuable to the artist than the verbal echo of media and the social arenas.”
  • Additionally, on Saturday, October 7th from 10 A.M. – 7 P.M., and Sunday, October 8th from Noon to 5 P.M., Fort Worden will be showcasing, in Building 204, the original works of wildlife artists from around the country and Canada.  During this “Second Annual Fort Worden Wildlife and Nature Expo”, programs and demonstrations will be presented by renowned artists.

Volunteer Opportunity

Northwind Arts Alliance, the sponsoring umbrella organization for Art Port Townsend, is searching for a volunteer coordinator for next year’s third annual, “Interactions: Art & Art” event.  The person should be an enthusiastic supporter of the mission of the Northwind Arts Alliance:  “to connect the community with the arts” and be able to pull in community organizations and individuals to participate in this production.  The person must be committed to exploring the intersections between all of the arts and know his or her way around the artistic community in the larger Port Townsend vicinity.  Experience in theatre production would be helpful, but is not required.  Masterful organizational skills are necessary, along with a high degree of energy and ability to work with artists to broaden the scope of creative interactive collaboration.  The intention is to provide a creative organizational platform for artistic collaborations beginning in November/December 2006 for next year’s performance in October 2007.  Please contact Sylvia White at (360) 379-6833 if you are interested or want to recommend someone for this exciting role.
