art. “People who fill their homes with original art work are passionate
about their collections,” explains Jan Hoy. “We would like to give them an

Poetry News
On November 9th, the Northwind Reading Series continues with writers Carolyn
Latteier and Barbara Sjoholm.
Carolyn Latteier is author of Breasts: A Woman’s Perspective
on an American Obsession, “a fascinating mixture of social commentary and
cultural history” (Leroy Ashby, PhD, Johnson Distinguished Professor of History,
Washington State University). She has given her slide presentation, The American
Breast Fetish, before numerous audiences, including the 1996 Lewis and Clark
Gender Studies Conference and the 2005 University of San Francisco Davies Forum
Public Lecture Series. The publication of her book capped a 15-year career as
freelance journalist specializing in health and psychology, during which she
received five awards from the Washington Society of Professional Journalists for
excellence in journalism. Her short story, “Ozette”, appeared in the Summer 2005
issue of Red Wheelbarrow. She is currently at work on a novel.
Barbara Sjoholm is the author of the new memoir, Incognito
Street: How Travel Made Me a Writer. She has also published The Pirate Queen: In
Search of Grace O’Malley and Other Legendary Women of the Sea, short-listed for
a PEN USA award for creative nonfiction. Her work has appeared in the American
Scholar, The New York Times, Smithsonian, and Slate, among other publications.
As Barbara Wilson, she is the author of Blue Windows and Gaudi Afternoon, which
won a British Crime Writers award and was filmed in Barcelona. She is currently
at work on a travel narrative about the north of Scandinavia in winter, which
will be published in 2007. She lives in Port Townsend.
Volunteer Opportunity
Northwind Arts Alliance, the sponsoring umbrella organization for Art Port
Townsend, is searching for a volunteer coordinator for next year’s third annual,
“Interactions: Art & Art” event. The person should be an enthusiastic
supporter of the mission of the Northwind Arts Alliance: “to connect the
community with the arts” and be able to pull in community organizations and
individuals to participate in this production. The person must be
committed to exploring the intersections between all of the arts and know his or
her way around the artistic community in the larger Port Townsend vicinity.
Experience in theatre production would be helpful, but is not required.
Masterful organizational skills are necessary, along with a high degree of
energy and ability to work with artists to broaden the scope of creative
interactive collaboration. The intention is to provide a creative
organizational platform for artistic collaborations beginning in
November/December 2006 for next year’s performance in October 2007. Please
contact Sylvia White at (360) 379-6833 if you are interested or want to
recommend someone for this exciting role.
