Leticia Huber

Leticia Huber was born and educated in Mexico, where she became an accomplished actress and a published writer and poet. She has been a professor of Spanish for University of California at San Diego and United States International University. She is a linguist, interpreter, published poet and poetry translator, and she and her husband own Huber’s Inn in Port Townsend.  “Colors, music, textures, feelings, sounds, movement, flavors are poetry,” Leticia says. “In fact, poetry seems to be all-encompassing; and it comes through us—in spite of us—as long as we accept it and allow it. Poetry is in everything and it is mainly healing.”

To Giorgio

I could cry

until islands and ships

would populate

my tears

But your life

has been glorious

and

your life has been

sunshine

so

it grows my flowers

and dries my tears

my friend beloved

I could tear

my clothes in pain

and cry my eyes away

for they won’t see you

wearing your darling

tall

and skinny body

any other day

of my life

I hardly imagine

my life

without the certainty

of hearing

your baritone and playful voice

on the phone

to tell me a joke

Without

our yearly treasures

of time together

to discuss

the world

and the quantum

and love

and friendship

and laugh

Oh!

I could break down to pieces

and melt away

in my sorrow

I could

sing the saddest song

—as my heart does—

But your laughter saves me

from your absence

shocking

But I could almost

touch you

in the gardens of my mind

where I see

your twinkling eyes,

your beautiful

impeccable

linen long-sleeved shirt

carefully folded over your able arms

your long

strong

productive hands and fingers

picking the huge mangoes

you and your scientist partner

designed and co-created

for my son’s pleasure

and mine

Oh

gentle soul

I did meet you

We loved

each other

in friendship

more profoundly

than I

could have ever dreamed

That

you remind me

in that photo

where we went to an island

just

to better enjoy our picnic

And I traveled the world

just for the love

of your company

for the sparkle in your eyes

my friend

my beloved friend

I have been blessed

to meet you

My heart

is my heart

with your shape

My mind

is my mind

with your memories

My life

is my life

with your life

in it

And may

our friendship

in triumph eternal

seal our meeting

beyond space

and time

and matter

And

at one point in Spirit

my friend

may I find myself to be

a living celebration

of your life!

Kelly from the Co-op

As a brook

refreshing

Thirst-quenching

always cool

always fun

and beautiful

in her slender

tallness

With the caring

elegance and grace

of a deer

with fawns

she is mother

to her children

To the rest of us

always available

in friendship and service

Young

as the morning

Wise

as a child

Knowledgeable

and efficient

compassionate and joyful

as friendship is

or

as love
