Artist Statement

After forty years, I am still excited by the inherent cyclical nature of the ceramic process. Taking risks, exploring new dimensions, “playing with fire”, literally mirrors life in terms of anticipating change and accepting the results and challenges presented. The ceramic chemistry and carving may appear to be complicated, but I actually rely on time-tested ancient processes. Universal symbols illustrate a sense of order and space through abstraction and geometric formalization. Innovation is a result of how the symbols, colors and theories are energized by a synthesis of new ideas and modern technology.

After receiving her BFA from University of Colorado, Linda founded Linda Chapman Design. She started her studio practice in Boulder, CO and has practiced her craft in the San Francisco Bay area, and Hanalei, HI. She now works out of her studio on the Olympic Peninsula near Sequim, WA.

Corporate and private collectors on five continents have selected her pieces to enhance their offices and homes. Her work has been selected for juried and invitational shows, including “Strait Art” and “Art Convergence” at the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center; Hawaii Craftsmen Annual Juried Show, Honolulu: Cherry Creek Art Festival, Denver; American Craft Council Fine Craft Show, Baltimore and San Francisco; “Functional Ceramics National” at the College of Wooster Art Museum in Ohio; “Art Frenzy” presented by the Colorado Lawyers for the Arts; “Colorado Colors” at the Colorado History Museum; Y2Klay” at the Denver International Airport; Art of Craft, Denver Art Museum; Beaux Arts Society Exhibition, Boise Art Museum; the Tzedakah Box Invitational at Mizel Museum; Craft Biennial, Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center and the Colorado Artist-Craftsmen show at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian in Washington, DC. Linda has had one-woman shows at Denver National Bank and Boulder Public Library.
