Academic discipline demands mastery of painting drapery. Draperies became the foil for nude figures, the colorful draperies setting off the warm flesh tones. Painting from life is totally different from photo-based Realism. With little concern for how other artists might approach their subjects, I continue along my own path, just doing what I like to do – painting from life.
Joe Dahm, a graduate of the University of Dayton (BFA 1969) and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (MFA 1970), currently paints in Port Townsend, WA. As the recipient of a NEA grant, he spent time in the art centers of New York City and Chicago, producing abstract metal sculpture and Cubist-inspired paintings. He experimented with shaped canvases and Conceptual Art. After several years Dahm returned to figurative painting, to the study of great European figure painters.
