2016 Expressions Northwest

Artist Statement

I use brilliant color and heavy impasto in my expressionist images that connect the viewer to the magnificence of nature.

Biography

I have been painting since I was in my teens but I began painting professionally in Hawaii under the name Kavika (Hawaiian for David) in 1990. My work has been in numerous shows in Hawaii and has won best of show and people’s choice awards. My current work features images of the Pacific Northwest where I now live.

Art Instructor/Teacher

I use brilliant color and heavy impasto in my expressionist work. I show students how to create images following the same techniques I use, but I also help students to find their own voices if they prefer other modes of expression such as realism or impressionism. I teach dynamic composition, modeling 3D form, and how to avoid muddy colors, all of which are important in any style of painting.
