Artist Statement

Painting is my first passion. It starts when my feet touch the floor in the morning and I survey the scenery outside my window – What is the color of the light? How can I compose a painting from what I see? How do I get the viewer’s eye to travel through the painting I am visualizing? Should I use oils or pastels? How can I simplify the painting? If one or two out of twenty of “my minds eye” paintings seem to work I’m excited. I can’t wait to start painting, in my studio, or better yet outside – I can hear my teachers, “Work from life Fred – as much as possible”. I’ve taken that advice to heart and paint /draw from models weekly and paint outside as often as possible.

My second passion is teaching portraiture. I’ve taught for eight years and find the student/teacher give and take exhilarating. But best of all is witnessing their improvement and knowing I made a profound impact on their art.

I paint people to reveal something I sense in my subject – a mood, feeling, grace, or beauty. In landscapes I am drawn not only to the light and atmosphere, but also to the subtle, often overlooked beauty nature displays.

Wow! That’s the reaction I want my viewers to experience when looking at my paintings. Sometimes I get it, sometimes I don’t. Humbling, yes but motivating –
definitely. When you stop learning you stop growing as an artist.

(from artist's website) "I have been drawing for as long as I can remember; however, it wasn’t until much later in my life (married and father of three daughters) that the passion for painting surfaced. Whenever I could, I took classes at night and on weekends. I studied with a number of outstanding artists who were always ready to share, teach, and push me to new levels of achievement - Jackie Goodyear, Sheila Rieman, Sally Strand, Albert Handel, Scott Christensen, Dan Gerhartz, and my painting buddy and good friend, Bud Edmondson.

Today, I am a full time painter and teacher of portrait painting. My sincere hope is I will be considered by my students as one of the teachers who profoundly helped them realize their potential in the field of fine art."
