Artist Statement

I paint from life as well as from photographs in my studio.  Although initially I use brushes, I mostly use my palette knives to apply paint to the canvas.

Using oil paints allows me to explore different styles, from more realistic portraits to the somewhat abstracted landscapes; in these I like using the paint to create interesting textures.  I also like exploring the relationships of the colors, using different colors of similar values in close proximity to create richness.

Many of my paintings get started and then move into unexpected directions; often I keep exploring these and the end result is really exciting when it works.

One of the best parts using oils is the smell of linseed oil when I open my palette…..  And I usually listen to Gospel music when painting.

I was born in Louisville, Kentucky and moved to Port Townsend in 1976. My education includes a BFA degree in ceramics and jewelry design and an MA in psychology. I have worked as a sculptor with a variety of mediums, including concrete and bronze. In 2007 I attended an introduction to oil painting workshop given by artist Diane Ainsworth. Since then I have continued to study with Diane as well as local artist Sandra Offutt. I currently paint in my home studio.
