I believe that the seed of my fascination with collage began many years ago when I was an undergraduate and my college had an exhibit of the work of Joseph Cornell. I was intrigued by the juxtaposition of totally unrelated items into a satisfying whole. Add to this my love of puzzles and thus evolves a love of collage. Making a collage is like working a puzzle, moving the pieces around until they “fit”, paying attention to color, movement, and shape. I first started making collages about eleven years ago but did not really have much time to devote to it until I retired eight and a half years ago.
I have had no formal art training, but have attended classes and workshops at Art Fest in Port Townsend, Art and Soul in Portland, OR, Art is You in Petaluma, CA, and Create/Seattle, as well as other workshops in the area.
I particularly love to work with old crumbly papers, tissue papers, and old text, both English and foreign, as well as music. Texture is also important to me, and I have incorporated such things as Braille pages, screening, wire, buttons, lace, and cheesecloth into my collages, as well as dimensional paper. Being a mixed-media artist, I find myself drawn in many directions. I am particularly drawn to vintage images, flowers, and faces. I have recently begun to work in series, which gives me an opportunity to develop an idea more fully and am also adding some more abstract designs and decorating my own papers to use in the collages. Another newfound love is beeswax collage.
Some of my pieces tell a story, like a dream, and others are based on playing with color, composition, and movement. I do not plan pieces out in advance, but go where the pieces lead me, sometimes beginning with a certain image and sometimes with a background that intrigues me. Always, though, I am led by color. I have also found that circles and squares and elements in threes have shown up frequently in my work, as well as pieces of rusted metal.
An avid gardener, I approach the garden as a living collage, with color, texture, shape, and movement guiding my plantings.
