Juror Michael McCollum Talks - December 15, 2013
Small Expressions 12: A Juried Show of Small Format Artworks. This juried show included works by 69 artists from Jefferson, Clallam, Kitsap, King, Pierce, and Thurston counties and showcased a range of diverse media from jewelry, painting, and sculpture to ceramics, fiber, photography, printmaking, and basketry.
Michael McCollum was a professor and dean of art at the University of Nevada for twenty- six years and a dean at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle until 2001. He has exhibited widely and his work in represented in many collections including the Renwick, Brooklyn and DeYoung Museums. He has worked in a range of media since 1964. McCollum now maintains a studio in Sequim where he is presently working in wood.
McCollum was pleased by the high quality of over 250 submissions and selected 126 works for this show. "I am always looking for something I've not seen before; using familiar materials in new ways as well as working with new materials." He was particularly glad to see more sculpture that reaches beyond the figurative.
